Corumana Dam

Within the framework of the management of Mozambique’s water resources, the government intends to increase the output of the Corumana dam in order to improve water supply to the Maputo metropolitan region. Consequently, civil works are under way for the completion of the Corumana dam, the first phase of which was built in the 1980s.

Impacto is involved in the project as a provider of environmental and social services in the environmental and social management programme associated with the works for the completion of the dam. In addition to the team of consultants assigned to the project, two senior specialists area are resident in the area affected by the works.

The provider of environmental and social services is broadly responsible for, but not necessarily limited to the following:

  1. Ensuring the implementation of all environmental and social activities related to the project, as specified in the Environmental Management Plan (EMP), the Resettlement Action Plan RAP), the Community Livelihood Plan (CLP) and the documents relating to the guarantees;
  2. Assisting in the establishment of an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) based on the EMP, RAP, CLP and monitoring the  implementation of the ESMS so that the impact on the quality or sustainability of the environmental and social components are efficiently managed by the executing agencies;
  3. Monitoring the application of the standards, analysing the effectiveness of measures to mitigate negative impacts and in general ensuring conformity with international best practice and the requirements of the World Bank which is supporting the project.
